The Kentucky Derby Experience

The 2011 Kentucky Derby will be held on May 6 and 7 at the world-famous Churchill Downs in Louisville. There is nothing like witnessing "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" live from the track, which is why attendance usually surpasses that of all other stakes races in the U.S. Anyone who has not purchased a Kentucky Derby ticket for this year can still do so in order to experience the action live.
Churchill Downs was incorporated in 1937 and the race has had a distance of 1.25 miles since 1896. All horses must be three years old to participate. The top five finishers receive a share of the purse and the fastest time run to-date was 1:59:40 by Secretariat in 1973. A record was set by Calvin Borel in 2010, when he became the first jockey to win three out of four consecutive times.
These facts are interesting, but there is more to the experience than the race itself. The rich and famous attend the race, which has become a fashion event. Eating is something to savor when attending one of the Levy Restaurants at Churchill Downs. Taste of Derby is a new related culinary event when participants sample cuisine from popular horse racing destinations located throughout the U.S., paired with the perfect wines.
Two of the long-standing traditions at the Derby are the mint julep beverage and burgoo, which is a thick stew made from pork, beef, vegetables, and chicken. Since 1896, Kentucky Derby winners have received a blanket made of 554 red roses. The blanket and a trophy are presented to winners by the governor of Kentucky.
Kentucky Derby Tickets 2011 cost $25 to $40 for general admission, which provides access to the infield, paddock areas, and all standing room only areas. Direct access to the racetrack is not included, nor is a program. Reserved seats can also be purchased for Sections 123, 124, and 125 Oaks and Derby, at a cost of $555 per package.
Of course, Kentucky Derby betting is what some attendees most anticipate. Future Wages allow fans to wager on possible competitors at odds often more attractive than those available on race day. Individuals can also rely on expert picks for the 2011 race if they will be attending the event. Whether enjoying the race trackside or from one of the luxurious Jockey Club Suites, attendees will have an excellent time.
